Senior Manager & Analysis Practice Leader, Global Risk Analysis, Control Risks

Nicholas Watson is Head of the Americas desk within the Global Risk Analysis practice. Based in Bogotá, Nicholas manages the overall content and direction of the Americas desk, and is also involved in the design and management of customised reports, as well as the delivery of briefings and presentations to individual clients.

Nicholas also provides bespoke analysis on Colombia and Venezuela for Control Risks’ clients and for its political risk service PRIME. Recent bespoke work has included an assessment of political risks and scenario analysis for a company under threat of expropriation in Venezuela, and a project risk assessment of a major extractive sector investment in Colombia. He regularly travels to countries in the region to meet businesspeople operating on the ground, as well as major stakeholders from governments and civil society.

Prior to joining Control Risks, Nicholas managed a business in the import/export sector in Brazil. He also worked as a field researcher into policing reform and gang violence for a leading Brazilian NGO, and co-wrote Fodor’s Guide to Mexico. Nicholas has a Masters degree in Latin American Politics from the Institute of the Study of the Americas and a First Class Honours Degree in Spanish from King’s College London. In addition to Colombia, Nicholas has lived in Mexico, Cuba and Brazil, and has travelled extensively across Latin America. Nicholas is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and has a working knowledge of French.
